Value/Smart Engineering

Value engineering is a critical part of any project to ensure that it is efficient and safe to construct while maintaining the project intent.

SCE Australia prides itself on its ability to provide smart structural engineering solutions to clients that result in significant project savings over our rivals.  Given our experience in both the construction and design engineering fields we are very mindful of the efficiencies that can be gained in construction with smart engineering.

Shan Kumar, former head of innovation with Hickory Constructions and now with SCE was previously responsible for the development of modular building systems for many hi rise buildings across Australia.  These buildings ranged in height from 30 to 60 storeys high and the modular systems developed cut construction times in half over traditional methods.

At SCE we undertake value engineering on all our own designs as a matter of course, however we also undertake such reviews on third party designs for clients.  We can provide a value engineering service on structural designs that are still at concept level, partially completed or fully completed.

We have had great success in undertaking value engineering reviews for contractors at tender stage, when a design is presented to them for tender.  SCE undertakes a review of the structural design in conjunction with the contractor and we present alternative concepts for consideration by the estimating and programming departments.  If these concepts are proven to provide an advantage, they are presented to client as an alternative design as part of the contractors tender.  Often such alternative designs that still meet the project objectives give our clients the edge over their competitors resulting in them winning the project.

When the contractor wins the project based upon the alternative designs, SCE can either complete the alternative structural design or act in an advisory role to the original designer.
